resumes normal operations this morning after a collision with a small boat yesterday. it left two boaters hospitalized. known on the ferry was injured. john alston has the details from marijuana general hospital. >> the damage to the 22-foot speedboat shows the force of the impact. a windshield shattered, a front side of the boat caved in. as the coast guard towed the damaged craft to tiburon, there was recorded video of the men work to go save the two men on the boat. >> the first guy was really not moving. they were doing cpr for a long time. >> the rescue either involved a surgeon and nurse who were on the ferry and jumped on the victim's boat to help.

the collision occurred as the ferry was on its way from sausalito to san francisco. it happened south of tiburon in the raccoon strait. none of the people on the ferry was hurt. >> yeah, we could feel it. the ferry didn't move that much but you could feel it and you heard it. we came closer, we saw two people lying on the boat. >> the coast guard said the bay was calm with winds at 15 to 20 knots. they said the smaller boat was reported to be traveling at a high rate of speed when it hit the ferry. the accident caused a commotion on the waterfront as the coast guard and medical chopperslanned and took off, providing a real life drama on an ideal lick saturday afternoon. >> you could tell they were doing cpr on one guy and they continued to do cpr. didn't look too good for him.

the other guy they loaded him up and he had some blood on his face. >> the coast guard has been interviewing witnesses. the ferry captain and five deck hands have been drug tested and placed on administrative leave, with i is routine in these types of accidents. the ferry was pulled out of service yesterday but regular ferry service should resume today. abc7 news. this morning a 72-year-old woman is not expected to recover from injuries received when she was hit by a muni bus in daly city. the accident happened about 4:30 yesterday afternoon. it involved the 1846 avenue bus. woman hit by the bus while in the crosswalk. family members were telling abc news the woman's injuries are very serious. they have signed a "do not resuscitate" form. muni driver will undergo standard drug and alcohol testing. >> in oakland police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened near a bart station. sky 7hd was overhead as police

responded to reports of gunfire on peralta near 8th street yesterday evening. it's close to the bart station. officers found a man with a gunshot wound to the head. homicide investigators blocked off access to the intersection right after the shooting. bart service was not affected. a follow lane on the richmond-san rafael bridge will stay closed for most of today. it's part of the ongoing installation of a new automated toll collection system. it's expect today reopen in time for tomorrow morning's holiday commute. the current toll system is 15 years old and officials say it needs to be replaced. currently there are no plans to remove all the toll-takers from from the state run bridge. >> about 5,000 people are expected to converge in san francisco today demanding a stop to the proposed oil pipeline. the keystone xl tar sands pipeline would extend from alberta, canada to the u.s. gulf

coast. it's one of several multi-billion dollars pipeline projects in the works. it would carry oil from the landlocked tar sands oil field which environmental groups say is a big step in the wrong direction. their so-called forward on climate rally will involve protesters surrounding the u.s. state department's san francisco office of the office at state market street. it will start at 1:00 this afternoon. there will also be speeches from 2:30 until 3:00. happening in just a few hours, runners will take over parts of san francisco's financial district. it's an annual lunar new year celebration. the chinatown new year run starts at 8:00 this morning at grant and sacramento streets. the course winds its way through the embarcadero back up to clay street. the run will be followed by a festival at portsmouth square. be advised several streets will have lane closers and some muni lines will also be affected.

republican paul ryane responds. don't miss it on "this week" with george stephanopoulos coming up on abc7. new this morning, thousands of relief workers are helping with recovery efforts after that meteorite explosion in russia. we are learning just how much it costs to repair some of the damage. [explosion sound] [screaming] >> very frightening. that sonic boom and resulting pressure wave blew out windows and collapsed doors in an industrial city of 1 million people. more than 1000 were hurt in friday's explosion. 20,000 emergency personnel are now on the scene. officials estimate the explosion caused at least $33 million in damage. the russian academy of sciences believe the meteor weighed about ten tons before entering the earth's atmosphere. this could be the road trip of a lifetime for a handful of bay area hackers, designers and

>> a u.c. berkeley student is featured in a nationally released video aimed for supporting citizenship for young immigrants. they referred to as the dreamers. the education reporter lyanne melendez explains who is behind this campaign. >> this is terrence. he is getting a degree in mathematics and applied statistics at u.c. berkeley. >> it wasn't hard to find terrence parks on the ninth floor of evans hall. we wanted to know why he wanted to speak out. >> i thought maybe it was the right moment for me to contribute something to the movement. >> the movement is called "the dream is now."

it focuses on urging congress to pass the dream act which would provide permanent residency to young people like terrence who were brought to this country by an immigrant parent. he was born in south korea. the video released nationwide was directed by david of "inconvenient truth and waiting for superman." terrence argues that instead of the government spending money to deport people, someone like him with a college degree would poor more money into the economy. >> the dream act passes, dreamers will earn $148 billion by 2030. so if they are going to earn that much money, that means they are going to spend this much money. >> terrence claims if the dream act doesn't pass, even with a math degree he won't be able to find a good-paying job. >> find a job where someone would pay me under the table supermarkets, laundry, things like that. >> rick says the dream act would encourage more people to cross the border.

and 630s at the beaches today. outside we are talking about 30s and 40s this morning. a beautiful view from mt. tam where it's nice and clear but there is fog in parts of sonoma and napa. east bay there is sun fog. sun is up at 6:55 and setting at 5:51. 10 hours, 54 minutes of day light. we are behind in our rainfall but what we will see on tuesday won't help us out that much. the cold systems really don't provide a whole lot of moisture. a little bit of sierra snow and low snow levels around here. here's a look at live doppler 7hd. it's quiet receipt now. it will be quiet tracking some cloudiness tomorrow. here's another live look outside. you notice how nice it is out there. temperatures, though boy definitely beginning to cool off 39 in livermore, 36 in novato. santa cruz and 45 in son hose and 51 in oakland. another look at the bay bridge this morning where we are

lacking at partly cloudy skies. foggier conditions are inland around the delta. 42 there. 47 in napa, 46 in santa rosa and down you go toward los gatos and gilroy. the visibility 3 miles in livermore. looking good in oakland and san francisco, just a quarter mile to the san carlos airport. in pockets we have the low clouds. definitely be careful out there. if you are headed out early this morning you notice it is getting lighter. but still the numbers have dropped in parts of our north bay as much as 4 degrees compared to yesterday morning. and we are still holding steady with some of the warmth in the mid-40s from the east bay to the south bay. so our highlights of this morning, another look at vollmer peak, isn't that pretty, too. you so the low clouds here. we call it partly cloudy, cooler for today and into tomorrow. much cooler president's day. the showers arrive in the overnight hours. we are looking at low snow levels down to 2000 feet here as this system heads our way by

the tuesday morning commute. high pressure is holding on for another 30 hours or so. you will in the jet stream still spinning north but off to the north and west. it's a front, a weak front burks it has a lot of cold air associated with it and it is aiming toward not only the bay area but the entire state of california will see wet weather and much cooler highs. so we are looking at numbers around the bay. cooler and take a look as we go into tuesday by noon. we've got the rain all around the bay. it's going to take through the afternoon hours as it sinks south. look at the pink. mount hamilton low snow levels. sierra 6 to 12 inches. not bad. throughout the day on wednesday notice the cloud cover but we will be dry after this semenov anywhere from a quarter to half-inch wettest location necessary the north bay. 50s along the coast 40s in the mountains 60s in southern california and back home upper 50s from half moon bay san francisco. 65 in morgan hill with mid-60s

>> welcome back, everyone. golden gate ferry service resumes normal service this morning after a collision yesterday near tiburon. one of the people is suffering from life-threatening injuries. >> one of them is. they were both brought here to marin general hospital following that crash. we have footage shortly after it appeared. it happened in raccoon strait yesterday afternoon. that's between angel island and tiburon. you see the damage to the

22-foot speedboat shows the force of the impact. a windshield shattered the side of the boat caved in. the collision happened as the golden gate ferry ms san francisco was on its way to sausalito back to the city. the coast guard said the bay was calm. a spokesperson for the golden gate transportation district said the smaller boat was reportedly to be traveling at a high rate of speed when it hit the ferry. none of the 500 people on the ferry were hurt. the accident, as you may imagine, caused a commotion on the tiburon waterfront at coast guard and medical choppers landed and took off. here's what one person told abc7 news. >> they were doing cpr on one guy. they continued to do cpr. didn't look too good for him. the other guy they brought up in a gurney and loaded him up. he had blood on his face. >> the rescue effort involved emts from the coast guard and the fire department as well as a surgeon and nurse who happened to be on the ferry. they jumped on board the

victim's boat to help. the coast guard interviewed witnesses throughout the night to determine exactly what happened. the ferry captain and the five deck hands were placed on administrative leave. we should mention that that is customary in these types of accidents. reporting live from mare general hospital, kira klapper, abc7 news. >> we wish both of these people a speedy recovery. thank you very much, career are you raw. in los angeles a controversial rally was held this weekend in support of christopher dorner. as you know, dorner died last week, possibly from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during a shootout with police. he is suspected of killing four people after issuing a manifesto claiming he was wrongly fired from the lapd. protesters are not agreeing with his actions but feel more attention should be focused on the police force itself and on the process that led to dorner's dismissal. later today a sad chapter in american history will be commemorated. tuesday marks the 71st

anniversary of the internment of japanese americans during world war ii. an event will be held in japan town to mark the occasion. the annual event at the theater will feature words and memories from internment cam survivors. it begins at 2:00 this afternoon. organizers have dedicated this year's commemoration to the late hawaii senator daniel inoway. this is new video showing pope benedict tickets and the tens of thousands who gathered this morning at st. peter's square to hear pope benedict conduct sunday morning mass. it's one of the last before he steps down. the vatican said the meeting of senior church officials to select a new pope, a process known as the conclave, may again -- begin sooner than expected. church rules says a concave must begin 15 to 20 days after the seat becomes vacant

after a period of mourning, but this time there's no need to mourn because pope benedict is alive. he decided to resign. speeding up the process could potentially give the church a new pope for holy week, the week before easter. the family of olympic runner oscar pistorius said he's overcome with grief after fatally shooting his girlfriend. the man, known as the blade runner is charged with the premeditated murder of her. that was en valentine's day. a reality show aired last night in south africa. the family talked to the media. >> disgust. as you can imagine, he's also numb with shock and grief, in total pain. >> attorneys for pistorius are expected to argue he fired at his girlfriend because he thought she was an intruder. prosecutors say the evidence will show that pistorius and his

girlfriend argued and she locked herself in a bathroom where she was shot four times through the door. an idaho man faces a federal charge after accusations he used a racial slur and slapped a baby who was trying on an airplane. it happened on a delta flight from minneapolis to atlanta. the 19-year-old's mom was sitting next to this man of idaho. she said he reeked of alcohol and continued to drink during the flight. as the plane was about to land her little boy got fidgety. he used a racial slur about the child as he told the boy's mother to shut him up but it didn't end there. >> i could not believe that he would say something like that. and to a baby or about a baby. and then to hit him was just -- i felt like i was in another world. i was shaking. she said other passengers came to her aid and she was able to move to another seat. both parents say they hope he is convicted and punished on the assault charge.

new this morning a popular annual event which draws hundreds of thousands to san francisco every year could be on the chopping block if congress and the president can't prevent automatic spending cuts from taking effect. the u.s. navy's blue angels could be grounded if the scheduled budget sequestration isn't resolved by the march 4th deadline. that calk an end to san francisco's an you'll fleet week celebration that the navy jets take part in. the parade of ships could also be in jeopardy. fleet week organizers tell the newspaper without those two signature events fleet week may not happen. that event draws about a million people to san francisco every year. >> still ahead showing skill and determination are a necessity for any job interview, but what about how you dress? up next we will introduce you to the east bay group helping low income job seekers find interview clothes for free. and we have a live look.

airport has been reporting half-mile visibility. along the coast there is some haze and cloudiness. the cooler numbers mainly in the north bay. elsewhere, not a bad start to your sunday. partly cloudy, cool this morning with much cooler weather on the way. so we are coming down about five degrees today. how about ten degrees cooler than today for tomorrow? and then only in mid-50s tuesday with a cold shower throughout the morning lasting through the afternoon. a look at high pressure. it's holding on for another day and a half and the jet stream still to the north. look what's to the north and finally we are beginning to see some action out here in the pacific. it's a cold front, a weak one. but the moisture coming from the gulf of alaska, allowing for not a whole lot in the way of moisture. here's a look at what you can expect tuesday morning. the rainfall up to the north 8:00 and cloverdale and you see the low snow levels in sonoma county. the snow levels will continue to

drop throughout the day. it looks like by the time it will head south we have some moisture around mount hamilton. 10:00 the north bay continues to see the light rain and by 2:00 in the afternoon san jose and into the central valley we are looking at the wet weather. by the evening commute looks drier but still looking at a two leftover showers. by wednesday morning most of the shower activity offshore but the cool air remains. today in the sierra nevada, 49 with sunny conditions. right now it's in the 20ths. 57 big sur so we are certainly cooler than we have been at our coast. but, your, that's more typical for february. 65 for san jose. so you know that's the nice afternoon. we've been spoiled. tomorrow cooler still and here comes the rain. wednesday a break and another chance of showers thursday and friday. these are just slight chances. nothing to help what is becoming a bit of a deficit. >> my ears perked up when you said snowflakes.

work is underway on the final set of improvements to highway 4 in east contra costa county. it's an area plagued with massive traffic backups. here's abc7 news transportation reporter heather ishimaru. >> this stretch of dirt will one day have tracks on it carrying bart passengers. between pittsburgh and antioch. completion of the line from pittsburgh bay point ten miles east to hillcrest in antioch is still four years away, but it's a beginning we are celebrating. east contra costa residents have been helping to pay for bart with nothing to show for it

since it was first envisioned in 1958. that's truly a lifetime of waiting. wade harper was born in 1964. >> this means an improved quality of life for our area. it means economic development. it means police and fire getting there safer and expeditiously to save lives. >> the people out here have been paying for a long time. this is long overdue, long related rail extension. >> this bart video shows at the new platform passengers will transfer between bart trains and the smaller e-bart train. no fair gates or barrier, just a 28-foot walk. the lighter e-bart costs 60% less than regular bart trains. >> it is really kind of remarkable. there's been a lot of conversation, a lot of quarreling, but i think we are on our way to opening an extension that really makes sense for the region. >> e-bart construction will really take off after 2015 when work on the final expansion project along highway 4 will be completed.
